Engaging Learners in Synchronous Online Learning Environments

Synchronous online learning environments enable students to interact in real-time with the instructor and other students though separated by a distance. These environments assist students and instructors to communicate synchronously using audio, video, text chat, whiteboard, application sharing, breakout rooms and several other functionalities available in synchronous platforms such as Zoom.

This presentation will focus on best practices and strategies to engage the learner in synchronous online learning environments. Specifically, we will discuss functionality available in synchronous online learning environments, best practices for establishing norms in a synchronous online learning environment and explore strategies associated with engaged, real-time online teaching. We will also review recommendations from research on why instructors use synchronous online learning environments, and how they use it in their teaching.
