How do I improve my presence in online class?

These are some simple practices available to promote instructor presence in an online course.

  • Posting announcements at least once a week highlighting course content and assignments.
  • Participating in online discussions by asking clarifying questions, providing your own insights, and correcting misconceptions.
  • Providing detailed specific feedback on course assignments.
  • Reaching out to struggling students.
  • Recording short video clips throughout the course to simply say hi to students or to help students make connections to real world applications. You may create these videos using VideoNote, MediaSpace, Zoom, or YouTube. Feel free to contact ID&T if you’d like to learn any of these tools.

Why is the sectioning date critical when it comes to course design and development?

We all want to try and be as efficient as possible.  The sectioning date is critical due to the fact that sections of a course are created from the master of the course on this date.  If changes to a course are not made by this date, the efficient use of resources is not being met.  Any change after this date will require not only a change to the master, but each of the sections of that course.  So, if you have a course that has three sections, and a change is needed after sectioning, the time required to make to make the change has quadrupled.
