ID&T announces a new professional development offering: Self-Paced Professional Learning Experience (SPPLE).

Each SPPLE includes active learning strategies to encourage deeper learning and application of the concepts to your teaching practice. While they are designed to provide a two-hour experience, you can start and stop as your time allows. A certificate of completion is available for your records.

1.Utilizing VoiceThread for Asynchronous Learning and Engagement

Description: Looking to diversify your course activities in a way that propels student learning and engagement in an online environment? Then consider VoiceThread, an asynchronous interactive collaboration and sharing tool that you can easily import into your courses. This hands-on, self-paced professional learning experience will introduce you to the various ways you and your students can use this tool in a course, and even more appropriate, VoiceThread is the platform for this learning experience. You will explore various use cases of VoiceThread, learn how to use the Assignment Builder function, and then practice creating voicethreads and adding them to your courses in Worldclass. This learning experience is ideal for first-time users, yet will also introduce new activity ideas for the more experienced user.

2. Online Faculty Engagement: 

Description: The goal of the Online Faculty Engagement learning experience is to support quality faculty engagement in online courses. This learning experience will take you through components on engagement with students. Ultimately, we address the question, “What is the impact / value of faculty-student engagement on student learning and satisfaction at Regis University?”

3. Strategies for Engaging Discussions: 

Description: The purpose of this self-paced learning experience is to help you improve the quality of your online discussion activities with the aim to engage your learners with critical thinking. This SPPLE is created in VoiceThread. Don’t worry if you have never used VoiceThread before. This SPPLE starts with a tutorial of VoiceThread.  Upon successful completion of the SPLE the participant will be able to:

  • Consider the elements of designing an engaging discussion,
  • Discuss behaviors and characteristics of an engaging discussion,
  • Reflect on the power of Socratic questioning, devil’s advocate, and critical thinking during the discussion,
  • Practice writing engaging discussion activities, 
  • Design a discussion activity that incorporates Ignatian Pedagogy principles.

 

4. Designing Authentic Assessments to Enhance Student Learning:  

Description: Are you tired of grading another APA paper? Do you sometimes wonder if your students are able to transfer their book knowledge to real world applications? When considering how to assess student learning in a course, most would agree that an ideal assessment doesn’t force students to memorize facts for a test. Instead, it allows them to use creativity to show what they’ve learned. In this self-paced professional learning experience (SPPLE), we’ll explore what authentic assessment is, why it is important, and how to transform a traditional assessment into an authentic assessment for learning. This SPPLE is created in VoiceThread. Don’t worry if you have never used VoiceThread before. This SPPLE starts with a tutorial of VoiceThread.

5. Creating Effective Instructional Videos:

Description:  The demand from students for more instructional video content continues to grow. Stay ahead of the curve and keep your classrooms engaging by adding more effective video content.  In this SPPLE, learn about creating effective instructional videos and the some of the tools available to you for such to increase student engagement in your courses.
